Australian Dragon Ball Z 2016 Organised Play Announcement

Strap yourselves in! Starting in June and finishing in October with our Australian Nationals event, large scale organised play events are back.

Three World Championships invites are up for grabs for Australian players with two different ways to earn the invites this year. Similar to last year, the top 2 finishers at the Australian Nationals will earn a paid invite to the Dragon Ball Z World Championships. In addition to that, this year the best performing player over the Local Championship and Regional events will also earn a paid invite.

In June, eight Local Championship events will be held across Australia, hosted by current TAK league organised play stores. These events will offer support to players travelling to Nationals in October. The prizes will include:

1st Place – $400 travel stipend to Nationals, trophy and exclusive playmat
2nd Place – $200 travel stipend to Nationals
3rd / 4th Place – $50 travel stipend to Nationals
5th – 8th Place – $25 travel stipend to Nationals

World Championship invite points will be awarded based on final placing and number of players present at each event. A player’s three top finishes in Local Championship and Regional events will count towards their final ranking.

Travel stipends will be payable to players on presentation of evidence of booked travel (flights / accommodation) to Melbourne for the Australian Nationals weekend. Travel stipends are cumulative.

Regional Championships will again be held around Australia through August, September and October. You can expect trophies, exclusive promos and points towards the World Championship invite to be on offer for prizes.

The organised play season will culminate in the 2016 Australian Nationals event to be held in Melbourne on the weekend of the 15th and 16th October. The event will be hosted at the Celtic Club, and the Top 2 finishers will earn themselves a paid invite to the Dragon Ball Z World Championships.

TAK Games are thrilled to bring organised play events to Australian players throughout the 2016 season and look forward to seeing as many participants as possible. Dragon Ball Z Perfection Preview #3 – Red Sword Stab (C50)

Our Dragon Ball Z TCG Perfection previews continue with an appropriately themed red style card in honour of Valentine’s Day. Make sure you keep up to date with all the reveals on other fan sites, including our friends at Next Level Z, Dragon Ball Z TCG Wiki, Retro DBZ, DBZ Top Tier, Fanatics Gaming Network and more.

Right through the heart... on Valentine's Day.
Right through the heart… on Valentine’s Day.

Trent takes a look at Red Sword Stab:

The promise of a new deck archetype awaits with the launch of Perfection – Sword decks. The introduction of Aggressive Sword Drill places emphasis on styled and freestyle cards needing Sword in their title.

Red Sword Stab, when examined alone, looks underwhelming. It only raises your anger 1 as an immediate effect. The damage, while decent, doesn’t match up to the potential of a successful Red Shattering Leap. But when you combine it in a deck that takes advantage of the new sword mechanic, it can be a great tool.

If you can keep these in your deck to search out with Aggressive Sword Drill when required, Red Sword Stab can give you access to some decent damage to supplement the other attacks in your hand. With the Red Ruthless Mastery and getting Red Sword Stab in hand for a +1 card advantage, you could really push for some big damage in a single combat.

The endurance on the card also assists to provide some mitigation against critical damage into the deck. Overall, Red Sword Stab should see play in Red Sword decks as potentially a 2-of inclusion to help supplement damage.

Australian Dragon Ball Z TCG Organised Play 2016 Summer Season

TAK Games Summer SeasonWe’re pleased to announce the Organised Play leagues are back in full swing for 2016. The season will incorporate all Australian Panini DBZ Challonge events held from the 1st January 2016 until the 31st March 2016. Players can register for the TAK Games Organised Play Network online at http://www.tak-games.com.au/organised-play/player-registration/.

The season leagues are an initiative run and funded solely by TAK Games to help grow and nurture the Panini Dragon Ball Z TCG in Australia, and there is no current program like it anywhere else in the world. Store supported events are the lifeblood of any collectible card game, and we feel this is the best way we can support everyone to continue playing and enjoying the Dragon Ball Z TCG. In turn, the bigger the turn outs at your regular store, the more points these tourneys help generate for local players.

Up for grabs this season will be a veritable swag of amazing promos. The exclusive Nationals Qualifier Top Cut promos Blue Betrayal or Red Shoulder Grab will be available to the top performing player. All tier levels will also see some popular promos from 2015 in the mix. Prizes will be awarded to the top 4 finishers for the season, plus participation prizes will be awarded to six players this season. This is an added extra for this season only due to there being no organised league play from October last year.

Over the course of 2016, we look forward to bringing more organised play events to all players with differing levels of competitiveness and different levels of prizes. This will range from casual tournaments held in local game stores, to the circuit with regionals and a National Qualifier event, plus some additional competitive events to slot in between the two tiers to ensure there are great events year round for players to participate in.

Our Organised Play page has all the details on prize breakdowns and how to accrue points. An organised play calendar is also available so you can keep up to date with events happening in your area, or if you’re travelling you can find games easily. The ladder for this season can be found at http://www.tak-games.com.au/organised-play/leaderboard/. If you have any questions regarding organised play, please contact us at dbz@tak-games.com.au, via our Facebook page TAK Games or group Dragonball Z TCG Australia or via Twitter @TAKGames_au

Get down and support your local game store as often as you can, build up your points, and keep enjoying the game!

Dragon Ball Z Evolution Preview #6 – Android 17 Ally and Android Presence

We were finally introduced to Android 18 and the new Black Style Mastery today and the time seemed right to examine what else Android players might have at their disposal once Evolution launches. We welcome back Tobye with analysis on two new Android-themed cards.

Android 17 – Beckoning

Another Android ally to play with!  When I first read his power, my mind ran wild thinking of all the ways to abuse it and deliver game changing damage each turn, with a huge setup count.  Then I remembered the new Black Perceptive Mastery.  Hmmm. He will be somewhat more challenging to use and abuse.

Android 17 – Ally will be great in some extremely board-heavy blue builds, where you block like a brick wall while playing allies and setups, protecting them with Blue Belly Smash.  Then once established throw out a Blue Draining Blast, and unload with a one-turn-kill.

The less logical side of my brain wants to use his bracketed effect to rejuvenate an Android card, in a mad Lord Slug Namekian ally deck.  Running all the Android cards he can with Android Presence, and the old Namekian mastery, you will be levelling up in ludicrous ways.  Not sure what it will achieve after getting to level 4, but hey…

Android Presence

R135Known for their brazenness, Android Presence sets out to make sure everyone knows and fears the Androids. It is not only powerful, like all cards that allow you to level up, but adds a mental element to a lot of match-ups.

For example, if you are playing a physical beatdown deck, you really want to keep an opponent’s Android 18 on level 1. So if you see 4 Android cards in their discard pile, and have discard pile removal in your hand (say, a Devastating Blow), you will feel compelled to enter combat to banish those cards. Even if the rest of your hand is rather lackluster. This fear can play into the hands of Android players, who may not even be running Android Presence in their deck.

What is also interesting is you do not need to be an Android MP to use this card. While there are not many non-named Android cards for non-Android MPs to run, it’s still possible to get a free level with this card, and there may be some builds that find a way to take advantage of this.

I am very fond of cards like this which are potentially very powerful, versatile, add skill and fear to plays even when not in a hand or even in the game, and are thematically accurate to boot!

As we get closer to Evolution’s release, I am seeing a whole lot of fun and interesting interactions to do with the Androids, and expect Android ally decks to be varied and legitimate contenders.

– Tobye.
